it / Zaleuco’s CAPTCHA è una video installazione composta da un software realizzato in linguaggio di programmazione Java. Come si evince dal titolo l’opera è concepita intorno a due elementi fondamentali. Il primo, subito evidente, è il CAPTCHA (acronimo di Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart): un test audio/video utilizzato in informatica per distinguere se un utente sia umano o un computer. Questi test vengono largamente utilizzati in rete per arginare programmi automatici che mirano a impossessarsi d’informazioni sensibili o fare attività di spamming. Il secondo elemento è il codice di leggi scritto da Zaleuco intorno al 600 a.C. e considerato uno dei primi codici di leggi scritte del mondo occidentale, talmente avanguardista per i tempi da far dubitare dell’esistenza stessa del suo creatore.
Il software realizzato per l’opera compone i test CAPTCHA pescando tre parole casuali all’interno dell’antico codice di leggi. Questo evento avviene ogni cinque secondi durante i quali il fruitore ha facoltà di decifrare le parole indicate, auto testando la propria capacità di essere umano e traendone parziali chiavi di accesso al codice stesso. Le frasi composte possono risultare per lo più prive di senso ma puntano l’accento su determinate parole cardine scritte da Zaleuco come: alienare, patrimonio, schiavi, senato, ammenda, morte, causa, conciliazione, vendita, produttori, ladro, riforma, legge; elementi della nostra società che dopo 2600 anni l’uomo cerca ancora di regolare e comprendere fino in fondo, dinamiche alle quali anche l’opera non è esente. en / Zaleuco’s CAPTCHA is a video-installation composed by a software providing the Java language programme. It is clear from its title that the concept of the artwork is based on two fundamental elements: the first is the acronym CAPTCHA which stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, an audio video test employed in Information Technology to find out who is behind the real user, a human being or a computer. These kind of tests are largely utilized on the web with the aim of stopping every possible automatic programmes able to steal confidential information or do any spamming activities. The second element is the code of laws written by Zaleuco di Locri (600 B.C.), considered as one of the first legislators of the West world, so well-advanced for that period of time to make people doubt about his own existence.
The software made for the artwork sets up the CAPTCHA tests by picking three words randomly into the ancient code of laws. This process is repeated every five seconds during of which the visitor may decode the indicated words so self-testing their own capability of being a human and eventually get into a preliminary pass key. The sentences coming out may sound meaningless but mostly are aimed to remark on specific nouns written by Zaleuco such as: to alienate, property, slaves, senate, amends, death, trial, conciliation, trade, producers, thief, reform, law ; all subjects of our history that man has been trying to rule and understand for a thousand years and to which the artwork by Giovanni Longo also participates in.
