A significant component of Giovanni Longo’s practice takes place along the fiumare of Calabria – seasonal watercourses that alternate between drought and flood, generating an ecosystem in constant transformation. For over twenty years, Longo has engaged with this natural cycle, retrieving driftwood shaped by the current. Through a process of comparison and classification, these fragments become part of anatomical structures – complete or evoked – that engage with space and time, enacting a kind of evasion from their place of origin.

“Engaging with the action that the river current exerts on these shrubs,” the artist explains, “is not merely a matter of recovery, but of interference. It is as if a dam were to divert this flow of matter, redirecting it elsewhere – such as an exhibition space. The spaces of interaction thus become twofold: the place of collection and the place where the process is completed, where these elements are removed from time, aspiring to become poetic devices.”

Like a Dam (form archive) is situated between these two temporal phases: a layered repository of wooden materials, archived according to visual and morphological analogy. The work is not a staging, but a working tool – a functional part of the process. It presents a metanarrative of care, dedication, and obsession, revealing how even the most minimal object – through a simple label – can return to significance, assuming a form of quiet resistance within the artificial condition of contemporaneity.
